Ashley R. Cummings | Education

My passion for writing began in childhood when I filled notebooks with poems, journal entries, and drawings. Still waiting for these to be worth money someday…sigh.

My love of writing continued throughout my education and into my undergraduate degree. I majored in English and focused my effort on editing our school’s literary journal, Touchstones. While I took grammar, rhetoric, and literature classes, my favorite classes were creative writing.

After graduating, I spent 2 years in Russia and Belarus fine-tuning my second language skills. My time in Eastern Europe ignited a new obsession—foreign language learning.

When I returned home, I enrolled in a graduate degree at Brigham Young University where I studied Russian, German, ESL, teaching, and curriculum design. I also invested heavily in academic research where I learned invaluable data collection, statistics, and research skills I still use today as a content marketer.

In 2011, I made a pivot back to my roots and started my freelance writing career. Continue reading to learn about my journey.

In 2011, I worked two jobs: a 9-5 job as a corporate trainer/instructional designer and a Russian instructor at a university.

But, something fun kept happening to me at my 9-5 job.

Colleagues from the marketing and sales departments often showed up at my desk asking me to write a quick something-something, edit a proof here and there, or just give feedback on their writing.

That’s when the lightbulb went off for me. Perhaps I should go back to my writing roots and start working as a SaaS freelance writer.

And that’s what I did. Since 2011, I’ve been working as a freelance SaaS writer and developing a comprehensive understanding of content marketing trends and strategies.

My writing has appeared on sites such as Business Insider, LinkedIn, Uber, ShopifyPlus, Salesforce, Hashtagpaid, Lume, Campaign Monitor, Omnisend, HostGator, Fuel Cycle, Salsify, Viator, and more.
